Proposed plan of action for our campaign:

1. Create a position statement from the commission. Finished.

2. Position statement is approved by the exec board. Finished.

3. Sample letters are drafted and revised to send with position statement. Finished.

4. Sample letters are approved by the exec board. Finished.

5. Sample letters and position statements are sent to businesses and higher ed presidents seeking support for position paper. This deadline for sending the letters is Tuesday, November 3. In progress.

6. Letters received by Carrie Mulvihill no later than Nov. 13.

6. Present letters of support and position statement to department of education. We are in the process of identifying the members of this committee.

7. Post the Position Statement on the IWLA website and list the people/business who have written letters of support. Ask members to identify additional people to write letters of support. Keep the letters of support coming in.

8. John Scott said that IWLA should appoint a commission that would work with the DE on the WL part of the Iowa Core Curriculum. I wonder if the Commission might already begin to study the Social Studies part of the Iowa Core Curriculum (to see how it is written) and begin work on what IWLA would propose that the WL part would be. IWLA definitely needs to be at the table when that part is written (and ideally, will lead the work).

Other ideas that are not included in plan:
  • Have JNCL-NCLIS look over position statement and letters.
  • Call Pat Westphal and talk to her about original task force.
  • Call Cheryl ? at DOE to find out how social studies became part of the core curriculum.

  • Involve the media if possible. Time a Register Editorial with the delivery of our position statement to the DOE
